Farm Grown Art in Rappahannock County

Hughes River Farm and the Art Studio are located in Rappahannock County, Virginia. The Blue Ridge and Old Rag Mountain, a few miles to the west, challenge the ambitious hiker, and the Hughes River runs along the southern border of the farm. Canoeists find good sport here when the river runs high, and fishing is good even at low water.

Hans Wolfram Gerhard has restored the dilapidated working farm, the old house and outbuildings. The refurbished chickenhouse has become his art studio. Here he paints his mainly abstract paintings, carves wood into whimsical birds and beasts, and welds found metal objects into fantastic sculptures.

The farm and art studio are a regular stop on the annual Artists of Rappahannock Studio and Galleries Tour. Hans plans to participate again in this popular event schedued for November 5 and 6, 2011. At other times, the farm and studio welcome visitors by appointment. (540-547-2447).

From September 10 to October 2, 2011, Gerhard's sculptures and paintings, including new work, are to be on view at River District Arts Confluent Gallery at 3 River Lane, Sperryville, Virginia. Gallery hours are Wednesday - Sunday 9am - 5pm. The artist's reception will be held Sept 17 from 2 to 4 pm.
